Asbestos is the name given to a group of six naturally occurring fibrous minerals: chrysotile, amosite, crocidolite, tremolite, actinolite, anthophyllite. Before being regulated in 1970, asbestos was commonly used for a variety of industrial purposes, usually as an insulator. On July 12, 1989, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a final rule banning most asbestos-containing products. However, the Environmental Protection Agency in the end was set back by a detrimental Fifth Circuit Court ruling. For more information on the asbestos litigation and the legal history of mesothelioma see our pages on those subjects.
Asbestos is resistant to fire and very high heat, is highly flexible and strong in tensile strength, making excellent properties for insulation materials. When inhaled, asbestos fibers cannot naturally be removed from the lungs and are carcinogenic which can lead to a variety of asbestos-related diseases like malignant mesothelioma, asbestos lung cancer and asbestosis. Although regulated in the United States, asbestos is still found throughout the country in homes and older products that remain in circulation.
As a side note, recent research is suggesting the carbon nanotubes may be similar to asbestos in the diseases they can cause. Pleural mesothelioma is considered a form of environmental lung disease caused by asbestos exposure.
