More than 1.3 million U. S. construction workers are exposed to asbestos each year. It is estimated that there will be about 250,000 cases of malignant Mesothelioma before 2020.

Over 27 million people in the U. S. are at risk of developing malignant Mesothelioma from asbestos exposure. Asbestos manufactures knew of the long term dangers of asbestos exposure but chose to ignore or downplay the role asbestos played in many reported illnesses.

More than 10,000 Americans in the U. S. will be diagnosed with Mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases each year. Malignant Mesothelioma is a rare cancer that affects the lining of the lungs, abdomen, heart and major organs of the body.

The number of people diagnosed with asbestos caused diseases in the U.S. continues to increase. Experts believe 60,000 mesothelioma deaths will occur between 2010 and 2030. The 3 main treatments for Mesothelioma are: surgery, radiation and chemotherapy.

Malignant Mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos through ingestion or inhaling of microscopic asbestos fibers as small .3 microns. Mesothelioma symptoms may not appear for 10-40 years after first exposure.

PROTEST ASBESTOS IN INDIA

Tuesday, March 1, 2011

Asbestos mining is banned in India, but its use in manufacturing is not banned.  India's manufacturing industry obtains much of its asbestos from Canada.  Sadly, the result is a growing cancer occurrence in India.

This past month, several new developments have been reported concerning India:

1.  The Canadian government approved funding to expand Mine Jeffery in Asbestos, Canada, with the hopes of increasing its export to India and other countries.

2.  The development of 12 asbestos factories near Bihar, India has been met with strong protest by local residents and students. This opposition has been met by police violence.  Batons have been used to attack protesters, and on at least one occasion, police fired their guns.  This resulted in injuries to 3 farmers.

3.  India's Supreme Court was asked to ban asbestos use.  The Court declined to take such action, noting that the legislative body of India is looking at the issue.  However, the Court did take the opportunity to note chrysotile "is highly carcinogenic. . . . In India, it is imported without any restriction while even its domestic use is not preferred by the exporting countries. . . . Canada and Russia are the biggest exporters of white asbestos. In 2007, Canada exported 95% of the white asbestos it mined, out of which 43% was shipped to India. In view of these facts, there is an urgent need for a total ban on the import and use of white asbestos. . . it is clearly demonstrated that the Government is required to take effective steps to prevent hazardous impact of use of asbestos.”
