As part of P&H’s continued commitment to providing personalized representation to Wisconsin workers, the firm hosted local union members at Miller Park to watch the Milwaukee Brewers take on the Florida Marlins last Thursday. During the event, Jon Neumann (Managing Attorney), Craig Peters (Trial Attorney), and Selby Lighthill (Trial Attorney) spoke with union members about the important work being done by unions to develop the state’s infrastructure. Safety issues were also discussed, with many guests remarking that safety too often remains an afterthought. Rick Schriener (IUPAT DC 7, Business Rep) and Daniel Slane (Chicago Regional Council of Carpenters-North Region, Business Agent), however, noted that general contractors were increasingly working with Wisconsin unions on safety issues. Injury reductions are occurring where such collaboration and early focus occurs.
In addition to enjoying a pre-game buffet, attendees had the pleasure of watching the Brewers defeat the Marlins, 8-3. Corey Hart had three hits, including his career high 30th home run of the season. Thanks to all who shared the evening with us at Miller Park’s Harley Davidson Deck, including attending members from Heat & Frost Insulators Union Local 19, Ironworkers Local 8, International Union of Painters and Allied Trades DC 7, Boilermakers Local 107, Wisconsin District Council of Bricklayers & Allied Craftsworkers, Chicago Regional Council of Carpenters -North Region, Operating Plasterers & Cement Masons International Union Local 599, Sheet Metal Workers Union Local 18, and Tile & Terrazzo Layers Protective Union Local 5. On May 5, 2010, P&H attorney Carolin Shining met with legislators in Sacramento as part of the Consumer Attorneys of California’s annual "Lobby Day" event. This year's event was particularly important as the proposed state budget for the court system had threatened to close dozens of courtrooms and layoff thousands of experienced court workers.
Ms. Shining, along with approximately 200 other consumer attorneys, spent the day in the State House meeting with legislators. Ms. Shining met with Senator Leland Yee, Assemblyman Kevin De Leon, Assemblyman Felipe Fuentes, Assemblywoman Lori Saldana, Assemblyman Isadore Hall and the general counsel for Assembly Speaker John Perez. Among the issues discussed were how the cuts -- which constituted yet a further 25% cut on top of last years' 25% cut -- would drastically reduce access to justice.
After the efforts of the CAOC lawyers, announcements were made that the governor's budget will replace funding for the court system that may avoid these drastic cuts and layoffs.
