Mesothelioma Resources

Untitled Document Finding the latest and most complete medical literature on mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma patients and family members often wonder where their doctors go for the latest information on this uncommon cancer. They also want to know where they can read the same information. Doctors typically get information from two sources; medical textbooks and medical journal articles.

The easiest way to see journal articles is to search PubMed online at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?DB=pubmed

PubMed is a service of the U.S. National Library of Medicine that includes over 16 million citations from MEDLINE and other life science journals for biomedical articles back to the 1950s. PubMed includes links to full text articles and other related resources.

For instance, using the search term mesothelioma and only looking for articles about studies done on humans (not animal studies) written in English you’ll find 980 different articles published just in the last year alone. With more careful searching you should be able to find articles that fit your particular situation and that are helpful to you.

Finding information in medical textbooks

Finding information on mesothelioma in textbooks is more difficult. The easiest thing to do is to call us at the Mesothelioma Research Foundation of America (800) 909-MESO (6376) and we will send you the chapter on mesothelioma from the very well-known testbook, Cancer: Principles and Practice of Oncology, 7th edition, 2005, by DeVita, Hellman and Rosenberg, or from Textbook of Uncommon Cancer, third edition, 2006, by Raghavan, Brecher, Johnson, et al.

Medical libraries also can be very helpful in finding medical textbooks. To find a library in your area contact the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM) which directs health professionals, educators, and the general public to health care information resources. Inquirers are directed to medical libraries in their region, which can provide assistance with research. Further information about the Network is available by calling 1–800–338–7657, or by visiting the NN/LM Web site at http://nnlm.gov on the Internet.
