More than 1.3 million U. S. construction workers are exposed to asbestos each year. It is estimated that there will be about 250,000 cases of malignant Mesothelioma before 2020.

Over 27 million people in the U. S. are at risk of developing malignant Mesothelioma from asbestos exposure. Asbestos manufactures knew of the long term dangers of asbestos exposure but chose to ignore or downplay the role asbestos played in many reported illnesses.

More than 10,000 Americans in the U. S. will be diagnosed with Mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases each year. Malignant Mesothelioma is a rare cancer that affects the lining of the lungs, abdomen, heart and major organs of the body.

The number of people diagnosed with asbestos caused diseases in the U.S. continues to increase. Experts believe 60,000 mesothelioma deaths will occur between 2010 and 2030. The 3 main treatments for Mesothelioma are: surgery, radiation and chemotherapy.

Malignant Mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos through ingestion or inhaling of microscopic asbestos fibers as small .3 microns. Mesothelioma symptoms may not appear for 10-40 years after first exposure.

Mesothelioma Treatment - Surgery

Peritoneal Mesothelioma surgery involves cutting into peritoneum, the protective lining that surrounds and protects the organs in the abdominal cavity and removing as much cancerous tissue as possible. Surgery may also involve cutting out portions of the stomach and the injection of chemotherapy drugs directly into the abdominal cavity (Hyperthermic Intraoperative IntraperitonealChemotheraphy or HIIC).  Post-operatively, the patient is administered paclitaxel, a chemotherapy drug, for five days. Peritoneal surgery can prolong life by five years for some patients.

Pleural mesothelioma surgery involves cutting into the pleura, the protective lining that surrounds the lungs and removing as much tumor as possible. If it is found that not all of the tumor can be excised, the removal of the diseased lung may be necessary. This is called a plural pneumonectomy.

Another surgical procedure is called a pleurectomy and is performed as a possible curative measure. A pleurectomy involves removing the inner and outer linings surrounding the lungs as well as affected lung tissue.

There are a few other procedures that can be performed to improve a patient’s quality of life such as pleurocentesis and paracentesis to drain fluid from around the lungs and abdomen.  Another procedure used to alleviate fluid build-up is pleurodesis.  During this procedure talc is inserted into the pleural space causing inflammation and preventing fluid-up.
