Cediranib (tentative trade name Recentin), also known as AZD 2171, is a potent inhibitor of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) receptor tyrosine kinases. It is being developed by AstraZeneca as a possible chemotherapeutic agent for oral administration.
As of 2007, it is undergoing Phase I clinical trials for the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer and colorectal cancer in adults, as well as tumors of the central nervous system in children.
On February 27th, 2008, AstraZeneca announced that the use of Recentin in non-small cell lung cancer will not progress into phase III after failing to meet its main goal. However, there are still 23 ongoing clinical trials listed in the cancer.gov trial database using this drug. And one of those trials is using AZD2171 for mesothelioma.
