More than 1.3 million U. S. construction workers are exposed to asbestos each year. It is estimated that there will be about 250,000 cases of malignant Mesothelioma before 2020.

Over 27 million people in the U. S. are at risk of developing malignant Mesothelioma from asbestos exposure. Asbestos manufactures knew of the long term dangers of asbestos exposure but chose to ignore or downplay the role asbestos played in many reported illnesses.

More than 10,000 Americans in the U. S. will be diagnosed with Mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases each year. Malignant Mesothelioma is a rare cancer that affects the lining of the lungs, abdomen, heart and major organs of the body.

The number of people diagnosed with asbestos caused diseases in the U.S. continues to increase. Experts believe 60,000 mesothelioma deaths will occur between 2010 and 2030. The 3 main treatments for Mesothelioma are: surgery, radiation and chemotherapy.

Malignant Mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos through ingestion or inhaling of microscopic asbestos fibers as small .3 microns. Mesothelioma symptoms may not appear for 10-40 years after first exposure.

Asbestos Disease: Mesothelioma Overview

At Law Offices of Jerry Neil Paul, we devote a significant portion of our legal practice to asbestos litigation, which includes representation of those diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma.  Malignant mesothelioma is an incurable type of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. The cancer develops when inhaled fibers attack the mesothelium (lining) of the lungs, stomach, and heart where it causes malignant growths.

The mesothelium is made up of parietal and visceral membranes, which are thin layers of tissue that surround organs and body cavities.  The visceral membrane surrounds the organ, and the parietal membrane is a sac that covers the visceral membrane. Together the visceral and parietal membranes make up the mesothelium.

Asbestos can cause mesothelioma with only small levels of exposure, but the cancer itself takes decades before symptoms manifest. By then, it nearly always has become malignant.  Although exact numbers are not available, the CDC has reported that approximately 2,500 individuals currently are diagnosed annually with mesothelioma in the U.S.

There are three main types of mesothelioma: pleural, peritoneal, and pericardial.  Pleural mesothelioma affects the tissue surrounding the lungs. Three quarters of all mesothelioma cases are pleural.   Peritoneal mesothelioma is the second most common type of the disease, affecting the lining surrounding the organs of the abdomen.  The least common form of mesothelioma is pericardial mesothelioma. This extraordinarily rare cancer affects the lining around the delicate sac that contains the heart muscle.
