Improper Fire Protection on Premises

Fire is a real hazard at many agricultural, construction, and industrial worksites. Numerous standards and regulations contain provisions designed to prevent and eliminate fire and associated injuries. Above all, it is vital to have a plan that is communicated to workers and enforced. 

If a fire does occur, steps can be taken to minimize its severity.  Fire protection plans may specify fire extinguishers, functional standpipes, alarm systems, automated spark detection and extinguishing systems, and set-back areas to contain fires. 

To eliminate or lower the risk of injury to workers, entry into the worksite should be available to fire department/emergency personnel and apparatus. Similarly, workers should have appropriate means of exit.  All exits from buildings should be unobstructed and unlocked. “Panic bars” or similar devices on security doors are allowable provided they are maintained regularly.

The responsibility of providing for an appropriate fire protection system may reside with any number of contractors on a jobsite.  Manufacturers of safety doors, fire extinguishers, and other products also may be liable for the supply of products that are defective, resulting in harm. Such defects may include manufacturing defects, defects in design, or defects in the instructions or warnings associated with the product.
